Citation Machine |
Bibliography Maker |
There are two online Web sites you can use to generate proper citations (bibliography entries) on your bibliography pages. The first, easier but less reliable, is "Citation Machine." The second (below)--more reliable but slower to use--is "NoodleTools" (below). Citation Machine is good for just a few simple entries. However, for fully accurate and/or longer or more complex entries, NoodleTools is far better.
If you would like to use Citation Machine, simply go to http://citationmachine.net and start. If you would like to use NoodleTools, see the next section below.

I have paid for a subscription to "NoodleTools," a Web tool that helps you make an MLA or APA bibliography. Once you have signed up (it's free), all you have to do is enter the elements of a bibliography entry (e.g., author's names, title, publisher, etc.), and NoodleTools then will make a perfect bibliography entry that you can copy and paste into the bibliography of your own paper.
Please note: you may use this tool only if you are part of a school class or school club that is working with me, or you are a colleague. If you are, then please use the following instructions.
Instructions for New Users (Print these instructions or create a second browser window.)
Go to http://www.noodletools.com/login.php?group=2940&code=2105
anytime now to August 9, 2007. If you have your own computer,
bookmark this site.
You'll come to the "Inver Hills Community College
Personal Folder Login." If you're a new user, do not try
to write a personal login and password. Instead, go to the bottom of
the box and click on "New User? Create
a new folder."
Next, you'll come to the "New user registration"
page. You will then have to fill in the "School/Library
Username" and "School/Library Password." You must get
these privately from me. I will give them to you in class or by
email. If you have not yet received them, email me--remind me who
you are, and then ask me for the NoodleTools School/Library Username and
Password. Then click on the small "login" box.
Then simply fill out the new registration page, providing
your own secret username and identity for logging in in the
future.
You may then try out NoodleTools instantly by logging
in. To write a bibliography, choose "Advanced MLA," as
that is what almost all my students use. (However, if you know APA
style and prefer that, you may choose it.) Use NoodleTools
anytime you want until August 2007 (possibly longer if I renew it).
If you do use NoodleTools, let me know what you
think! My own impression is that on basic bibliography entries, once
you've learned how to do one, it's easier just to copy the pattern for the
next one. However, on more complex bibliography entries, NoodleTools
can be a wonderful assistant.

Instructions for 2nd-time Users
Go to http://www.noodletools.com/login.php?group=2940&code=2105
anytime now to August 9, 2007. If you have your own computer,
bookmark this site.
You'll come to the "Inver Hills Community College
Personal Folder Login." Simply type in your own secret Username
and Password (not the ones I gave you). Then use
NoodleTools. If you have forgotten your old Username and Password,
you may use the system NoodleTools provides for remembering it, or you may
invent a new Username and Password--by starting over with the instructions
above for "New Users" (and be sure to write down your new
Username and Password somewhere).
